Vitamins for Cats and Dogs

As an owner, it is your responsibility to make sure your pet maintains good health.  There are many ways to promote an active healthy lifestyle for your pet, including regular veterinary checkups, regular exercise, and a complete and nutritional diet.  An additional way to make sure your pet is getting all the nutrition they need is by administering daily vitamin supplements.  A variety of non-prescription products are available for dogs and cats that can be extremely helpful in keeping your pet healthy, balanced, energetic and free from disease.  These vitamin supplements address a variety of nutritional issues, including inadequate dietary intake, hip and joint issues, and healthy organ function.

Providing your dog or cat with a balanced diet is not always easy.  Many pet foods contain low quality ingredients, and nutrient and protein sources are minimized due to high heat processing and long shelf life.  Pet food should be chosen carefully to meet the needs of your pet.  Additionally, certain health conditions may cause loss of appetite or poor diet in your pet.  Many veterinarians recommend the use of vitamin supplements when dietary intake in inadequate.    Products such as Pet-Tabs, Pet-Cal, and Nutri-Cal are all non-prescription supplements that provide a means of adding important enzymes, antioxidants, and vitamins to your pet’s diet.  These products help to correct nutritional deficiencies that have occurred.

Vitamin supplements are often used to address hip and joint issues.   Joint pain in dogs is a condition that is most often caused by injury, heredity, infections, and natural “wear and tear” on the joints.  The result is arthritic joint pain and stiffness.  Non-prescription products such as Cosequin are often recommended by veterinarians to help counter the effects of arthritis, joint and cartilage damage, and immobility.  Ingredients in these supplements help provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function by maintaining the cartilage structure and joint fluid

Healthy organ function is also supported by vitamin supplements and may help promote healthy skin, digestion, and kidney function, among others.  To maintain a healthy coat and skin, supplementation such as AllerG-3 is often used.  AllerG-3 is used in dogs and contains omega-3 fatty acids.  It decreases allergy related itchiness by interfering with the production of inflammatory substances that cause itching, making it especially useful in dogs with environmental allergies.  Healthy digestion is supported by supplements like Laxatone, a product used in cats to aid in the prevention and elimination of hairballs.   Other vitamin supplements address specific diseases.  An example is Epakitin, a powder used for dogs and cats to help fight kidney disease and renal failure.

Obviously, there are many vitamin supplements available to ensure that your pet remains healthy, balanced, and free from disease.  Products are available to help counter inadequate dietary intake, joint pain, and organ function issues, as well as to promote general well-being in perfectly healthy pets.  Although many non-prescription supplements are available, there are also many prescription supplements that can be obtained through your veterinarian.  Talk to your veterinarian about starting your pet on vitamin supplements.  Your pet will be healthier and happier!
